Loi Kratong, November, Thailand.
Loy Krathong is a very old Thai festival and represents a close bond between Thai culture and water. The festival occurs in November, around the middle of the month, when the water level is high and the climate is nice and cool. Participants, especially couples, ask water spirits to take away their troubles in specially made 'kratongs', which are containers traditionally made from banana leaves and which carry offerings of incense, lotus flowers and a small amount of money.
Buffalo Racing, Chonburi
The jockey rides the beast bareback :) with his legs astride the water buffalo\'s rump. He slaps the buffalo with a thin stick and bumps and grinds (this sounds dirty) as the beast sprints down the 130-meter (427-foot) course. Apparently, it\'s not always as easy as this, the buffalo doesn\'t always want to cooperate!
The other buffaloes, stomp their feet or try to buck their riders, presumably because they would be happier wallowing in the mud than running around in the sun.
Thousands of go to the annual water buffalo festival, held in Chonburi, 70 kilometers (44 miles) south of Bangkok.
The Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya proudly presents the 5th Annual Cross Bay Swim, which will be held on Sunday, 12th October 2008.
Two years ago there were only 16 swimmers and just one long 3.5 km swim, but last year marked the launch of an additional short swim of 1.1 Km and a total of 59 people took part. The 2007 Swim was highly successful in the ways of ?Fun, Fellowship and Finances?. There were many familiar faces as well as newcomers - mostly students from The Regents School- all doing their bit by swimming for charity. The short swim was won by Nancy Ellis and the fastest long swimmer was Nick Wilson, a Tri-athlete from Pattana School in Bangkok. Regent School students and teachers made up for most of the swimmers and between them, they alone raised sponsorship of over 110,000 Baht. Thanks to them and the many local sponsors the target of 500,000 Baht was reached.
This year more International Schools are expected to submit teams for the short swim and most likely there will be up to 100 swimmers participating.
Once again the Hard Rock Hotel will provide welcome drinks at the start of the short swim and Dusit Thani will host a buffet for the all swimmers at the finish.
